Guided hiking tour: Excursion in the national park on the traces of the Romans

Information about the tour:

The historic crossing of the Mallnitzer Tauern
Hiking time: 6,5 hours, ascent: 850m / descent: 750m

As early as 6000 years ago, goods were transported across the Tauern. Good paths and roads were an important condition. The historic passage across the Mallnitzer Tauern has lost its function as traffic and transport route. A hike across the Tauernhauptkamm (Tauern ridge) is still a special experience. On ancient remains of the roman road runs today a hiking trail. “On the trails of the romans” connects the present with history. Hikers learn about the flora, fauna and the geological process of the Tauern.
We will take a taxi from the train station Bad Gastein to Sportgastein (Nassfeld). We hike along the natural path through the high valley, where traces of the gold and silver mining are omnipresent. We can watch grazing cattle everywhere. After about half an hour, we’ll reach the ascent to Hagener Hütte (cabin). For experienced hikers it’s easy to handle this path with its numerous serpentines and crossings. We quickly gain altitude and get a magnificent view of the Nassfeld valley beyond the northern limestone alps. Numerous times the hiking path crosses with the route of the 2000 year old roman trails. We will have enough time to drink the natural spring water. Via Eselkar, we’ll reach after about 3 hours the Hagener Hütte (cabin) at 2.446m altitude, the actual Tauern crossover. Both, celtic and roman coins were found, which demonstrates the use of this passage in pre-roman times. After a cozy break at Hagener Hütte (cabin), hiking path Nr. 110 leads us over the south of the alps past Tauernhaus, which was built by archduke Johann in 1836. Even today the natural stone masonry and arches of the original building can be seen. The wide path with its numerous curves leads through the wonderful alpine meadows. After approx. 2 hours hike we’ll reach the Jamnigalm at 1.745 m. A bus will pick us up at the parking lot near the Jamnigalm and takes us to the train station Mallnitz. After a 20 minutes train ride through the Tauern tunnel we’ll reach the train station of Bad Gastein.
