The King’s House on the Schachen is just like King Ludwig II of Bavaria. No idea was too crazy for the King who had this beautiful castle built in 1860 in the form of a Swiss Chalet on the Schachen- in the tranquillity of the mountains and directly beneath Mount Dreitorspitze in the Wetterstein Mountains.

The façade of the castle was kept surprisingly simple. The luxurious “Moorish Courtroom”, which occupies the whole of the top floor of the building, lies in stark contrast to the castle's plain exterior. The luxurious “Moorish Courtroom”, which occupies the whole of the top floor of the building, lies in stark contrast to the castle's plain exterior. Here a world of red, gold and blue awaits you. It was here in the Turkish courtroom, which is equipped with divans and a central indoor fountain that the King chose to celebrate his birthday each year in Alpine seclusion.

Nearby you can also find a beautiful botanical garden with approx. 1,500 different species of Alpine plants and flowers. The garden is really special, particularly because of the high altitude.

By the way, the Schachenalpe Alpine hut is a popular starting point for further tours in the Wetterstein Mountains, such as those to the Meilerhütte, Dreitorspitze, into the Oberreintal Valley or into the Reintal Valley. And, of course: for further tours to Mount Zugspitze.

The King’s House on the Schachen is only open from Whitsunday to the beginning of October.
Guided tours through the hunter's lodge are available four times a day: at 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm. Additional tours are available upon demand.
