Stop closing yourself off! Give us the chance to open up the fascinating world of locks and keys to you and to inspire you with enthusiasm!

Each one of us uses them, we all pay little attention to them, but without these faithful companions we are completely lost: the keys. We find the iron companions in our language as well: think of your key competence as a key figure. Think of the scent of the cowslip, the attraction of the key to the heart of your loved one, or the melodies that can only be made to sound with a clef.

But there is so much more to discover! Do you know the custom of the widow's clef? Or have you been wondering for a long time where the myth of the chastity belt actually comes from? Why did every household have a lockable silver sugar bowl? And what is a snarling dog actually doing in a chest?

For over 50 years Hanns Schell has been dealing with everything that can be opened and closed. There are now 13,000 exhibits in the Schell family's private museum. We will inform you about various decoration techniques (etching, driving, swapping, blueing, etc.), well-known representations (allegories of virtues, of planets, from the Bible, etc.), wondrous materials (mother-of-pearl, ivory, tortoiseshell, bismuth, etc.) and illustrate this world with the most beautiful examples we could find for you. Many exciting and amusing stories as well as interesting historical backgrounds to our objects are revealed in our three-storey exhibition. Young and old alike will find their favourite pieces here!

We show you boxes and chests, doors and fittings, locks and keys from antiquity to the 20th century from Europe, Africa and Asia. As the icing on the cake we present you an exhibition on iron art casting. Filigree cast iron bracelets, stately chess pieces from historical battles and hundreds of other cast pieces of daily use from the 19th century can be admired here. There are also over 100 guild objects - outriggers and chests, grinding jugs and many more.
