Costumes bear witness to former times, to long-forgotten routines and lifestyles.

... Times which were tough yet uncomplicated and marked by deep faith with customs shaped solely by the relationship between the unforgiving land and its rough-mannered, industrious, big-hearted inhabitants.

In vain will we find fabrics embroidered with gold and precious laces and jewels. There is none of that. Instead, we find clothing made of moleskin, cloth, hemp, linen and raw fabrics which were almost always home-made, showing that people had to give priority to function over aesthetics.

Shapes, colours and materials evolved over time and were moulded and influenced by seasonal patterns of migration (1750 – 1900). Those returning from “abroad” brought with them lifestyles and customs which often directly influenced local customs. This saw local costumes taking shape and festive costumes becoming more decorative. The Lakes area first of all and then later the valleys witnessed the arrival of new fabrics: cotton, brocade and damask.

An evolution, which took many years. These images bear tangible witness to this trend.
