Logotyp Living Monastery St. Johann

A cultural jewel and particularly powerful place in Val Müstair is the internationally renowned monastery of St. Johann, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Alpine monastery, which is still inhabited today, owes its existence to Charlemagne.

The monastery church, built in the 8th century, contains the world's most extensive and best-preserved early medieval picture cycle. The Carolingian frescoes date from the 9th century and the Romanesque paintings from the 12th century. Originally a men's monastery, it has been inhabited by Benedictine nuns since the 12th century.

Worth a visit
The Carolingian monastery church with its wall paintings is the centrepiece of the monastery complex. Also worth seeing is the restored Holy Cross Chapel, which was also built in Carolingian times. It can be visited on a guided tour. The monastery museum in the Plantaturm, on the other hand, offers a glimpse into the enclosure. The exhibition presents 1200 years of building and living culture. A visit combined with a guided tour will be an unforgettable experience.
