The unmistakable landmark of Salzburg!

The Hohensalzburg fortress towers high above the Mönchsberg over the roofs of the baroque old town. As the largest completely preserved castle in Central Europe, Salzburg's landmark attracts millions of tourists to the Mozart city every year.

The history of the Hohensalzburg fortress
Archbishop Gebhard built the fortress in 1077 and thus had a decisive influence on Salzburg's city panorama. In the following years his successors were responsible for the further development of the fortress architecture. Around 1500 the fortress received its present appearance under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach. The original goal of the fortress was to protect the principality and the archbishops from hostile attacks. In all these years it was never taken by foreign troops.

A visit to the Hohensalzburg fortress
The fortress is open all year round. Since 1892 it has not only been easily accessible on foot, but also by train from the Festungsgasse. A special highlight of the fortress, in addition to the medieval princely rooms, is the fortress museum with historical exhibits from the court life of the prince archbishops. The Marionette Museum and the Rainer Regiment Museum also invite you on a journey into the past. The more than 900-year-old fortress is also the venue for the famous Salzburg fortress concerts.

The fortress Hohensalzburg in the 21st century
Innovation plays an important role for the venerable fortress. After extensive work on the high floor of the fortress, a multimedia magical theatre and modern media stations offer an innovative experience. The practical online ticket and the early bird discount expand the wide range of services offered by Hohensalzburg Fortress. Another highlight: Every Sunday at 11.45 a.m. the tower wind players from the Trumpeter Tower play. Baroque fanfares and festive elevators sound down into the old town on these days.

Everything's new at Hohensalzburg Fortress
The fortress museum was opened in 1952 in the so-called "Hohe Stock". Today it is part of the Salzburg Museum and is one of the most visited museums in Austria. In 2000 the museum was redesigned for the last time and was awarded the Austrian Museum Prize in 2001. In June 2019, the completely redesigned fortress museum opens its doors and displays selected objects from the medieval holdings of the Salzburg Museum. An oversized media installation provides an insight into the history and function of the fortress. A tour through a total of 13 rooms conveys various aspects of the Middle Ages and illuminates people and events in the history of Salzburg. At the same time the "Alte Zeughaus" opens - a new interactive museum dealing with the development of fortress construction and the introduction of firearms. www.salzburgmuseum.at and www.salzburg-burgen.at
