Welcome to the Danube market town of Mauthausen!
For centuries, water and stone formed the basis of this market town's prosperity. Its first documented mention as "Muthusen" dates back to 1208. Mauthausen lies at the crossroads of two ancient trade routes, nestled in the beautiful Mühlviertel landscape along the Danube.
One of these trade routes ran along the Danube from west to east. The other led from north to south and was used in early times for transporting salt from the Salzkammergut region to Bohemia.
The name of the old "Muthusen" – the toll station on the Danube – originates from the tolls collected here! Step into this historic market town, which still presents itself to visitors today with the same beauty in which it was originally built.
