Investing in the future: The new 10-seater gondola Kanzelbahn II (second section) as a milestone for the Gerlitzen Alpe

With the construction of the new 10-MGD Kanzelbahn II (second section), Gerlitzen Alpe is implementing one of the most significant infrastructure projects in its history. The investment of 22 million euros underscores the long-term ambition to further develop the quality of the mountain experience at Gerlitzen Alpe and to sustainably strengthen the region as a year-round excursion and tourism destination.

Direct connection to the summit

From 23.10.2026, the new Kanzelbahn II, a modern 10-seater gondola, will connect Kanzelhöhe directly with the summit of Gerlitzen Alpe at 1,911 meters above sea level. It replaces the existing 4-seater summit lift and thus creates a significantly more powerful and comfortable connection to the highest point of the ski resort. From autumn 2026, the 1,400 meters of altitude from the shore of Lake Ossiach (500m) to the summit of Gerlitzen Alpe (1,911m) can therefore be covered using two gondola lifts. With a carrying capacity of 4,000 people per hour, a speed of 6.5 meters per second, and a resulting journey time of 5-6 minutes from Kanzelhöhe to the Gerlitzen summit, the new system guarantees continuous and smooth transport - both in winter and during the summer season.

The modern Doppelmayr 10-seater gondola with large panoramic windows enables a fast, weather-protected, and barrier-free ride, increasing comfort, safety, and quality of stay for all visitors. This benefits not only winter sports enthusiasts, but also hikers, day-trippers, mountain bikers, paragliders, as well as pedestrians and winter hikers.

A significant boost for the region

Kanzelbahn II is far more than a cable car project. It represents a key development step for the tourism destination Gerlitzen Alpe and the entire Villach - Lake Ossiach region. By modernizing the infrastructure, the competitiveness of the ski resort is strengthened, tourism value creation is increased, and important long-term impulses are created for employment, overnight stays, and regional economic cycles.

Technical data Kanzelbahn II

•Cable car type: Doppelmayr 10-seater gondola (10-MGD)
•Carrying capacity: 4,000 people per hour
•Speed: 6.5 m/second
•Investment volume: 22 million euros
•Construction start: April 2026
•Completion: October 23, 2026
•Direct connection from Kanzelhöhe to the Gerlitzen summit at 1,911 m above sea level
•Replacement of the existing 4-seater summit lift

Eco-Friendly Travel – Start Your Ski Day with Ease
For the 2026/27 winter season, Gerlitzen Alpe once again sets a strong example for environmentally friendly mobility: All holders of a 20-hour pass, season ticket, or online day ticket can travel for free on all ÖBB S-Bahn trains from anywhere in Carinthia – simply and conveniently. The ski pass automatically serves as a valid train ticket for both the inbound and return journeys to Annenheim station, located directly at the Kanzelbahn valley station.
This initiative combines climate-friendly travel with maximum convenience: no traffic jams, no parking stress – just a relaxed journey with direct access to the ski area. At the same time, the program helps reduce individual car traffic, protect the environment, and promote sustainable tourism in the Alpine region.
With this initiative, Gerlitzen Alpe is among the few ski resorts in Austria to actively integrate public transport into its guest strategy – in close cooperation with ÖBB and the region. The aim is to help shape the mobility transition in the leisure sector and provide guests with an attractive all-in-one package of accessibility, sustainability, and quality.

Strategic Development in Recent Years
This year’s investments are part of a long-term development strategy. In previous seasons, key steps have already been implemented, including:
•Photovoltaic system with 100 kWp capacity at the Annenheim valley station

  • Expansion of ski runs (e.g., Alpenrose slope)
  • Optimization of learning areas for children and beginners
  • Modernization of valley station infrastructure
  • Digitalization of services (webshop, smartphone ticketing)
  • Construction of a three-story parking deck
  • Introduction of free S-Bahn train travel from across Carinthia

Through these measures, Gerlitzen Alpe reinforces its ambition to play a leading role as a future-oriented, family-friendly, and ecologically responsible ski resort in the heart of Carinthia.
