Feldkirchen is the capital of the identically-named district in Carinthia. Conveniently located on the northern ridge of the Klagenfurt basin in central Carinthia between 550 and 900 m (1,800- ft) above sea level and surrounded by lush meadows and extensive forests, lies the old craft town Feldkirchen with its neighboring localities Waiern, St. Ulrich, Glanhofen, St. Nikolai, St. Martin, Sittich, Klein St. Veit and Radweg. Its location makes Feldkirchen the ideal base for varied holidays summer and winter alike. The south-eastern foothills of the gently rolling Nockberge Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for exceptional hiking and biking opportunities.

The idyllic swimming lakes in this area offer a place to cool off during the warmer summer days or invite visitors to ice-skate or play ice-hockey in winter. Feldkirchen is also the perfect holiday destination for skiers, snowboarders or cross-country skiers with several larger ski resorts and some real insider’s tips located just a few minutes’ drive away. But it’s not just the beautiful scenery surrounding Feldkirchen with a wide range of leisure options, also the town itself is always worth a visit!

First populated by Neolithic cultures, the territory around present-day Feldkirchen can be tracked back to Roman times as early as 15 BC when eventually the existing primitive road system was extended to make Feldkirchen an important junction. When the first wave of Christianization reached Carinthia in the mid 9th century the first “Church in the Fields“, today’s parish church Mariä Himmelfahrt, also called “Maria im Dorn“ was built. In the early 11th century, the Diocese of Bamberg gained increasing influence and the bishops had the Amthof erected, the former seat of the local administration. Today the Amthof serves as cultural and event venue and is home to the Amthofmuseum taking visitors on an active journey through the history of culture, economy and nature of Feldkirchen.

In 1759 Empress Maria Theresia acquired Feldkirchen and it became an Austrian provincial market town. Feldkirchen received town privileges in 1930.

Besides the Bamberger Amthof also the Stadtsaal is well-known for the superb cultural offer. The Stadtsaal is famous for its international concerts and literary gatherings. In the Stadtsaal hall the focus is on music, featuring national as well as international artists.

The aviation club Feldkirchen / Ossiacher See offers scenic flights with power gliders, motor planes or modern gliders at amazingly low rates. Take to the skies and experience the town of Feldkirchen and its environs from a bird’s eye view!
But in Feldkirchen it is not only those fancying culture and nature who find what they are looking for. Visitors who like strolling leisurely through the streets, lingering a while in cultivated pub gardens or browsing in shops and boutiques for latest fashion trends will be spoilt for choice during their stay in Feldkirchen.
