Offensee – a mountain lake at the foot of the Totes Gebirge
Altitude 649 m, 60 ha in area, 900 m long, 900 m wide, approx. 28 m deep, nature reserve at the foot of the Totes Gebirge, crystal-clear water, free natural bathing beaches, gently sloping shores (particularly suitable for children and non-swimmers); snack bar at the “Seeau”, where there is a lovely large sunbathing lawn, reachable from the left-hand car park in around 20 minutes’ walk. Dogs are not permitted on the sunbathing lawn!
Well-marked circular walking trail, starting point for extended hikes (e.g. Rinnerhütte, via the high trail to Almsee, Fahrnau...) or mountain bike tours. Please cycle very slowly as there are many people out and about. Good route for jogging (5 km around the lake), former hunting lodge of Emperor Franz Josef, diving strictly prohibited. Public toilets and disabled toilets are located by the car park on the left. Dogs are not allowed in the water!
Important note: Lake Offensee has been designated a European protected area, meaning the use of many items is officially prohibited (air mattresses, inflatable boats, SUPs, kayaks/canoes and more). Signs to this effect are displayed at the car parks.
